What is scifi-realism?

Obviously I didn’t invent this sub-genre, but I’ve never heard anyone else give it a name. If anyone knows a name for it, let me know.

Main ingredients:

1. Driving characters

a. The interior and interpersonal lives of the main characters need to be complex and compelling

b. The important characters must have meaningful personal limitations that move the story

c. This puts the genre closer to the “character-driven” or “literary” model

2. A relatable world

a. The reader needs to believe the world of the story could be the actual world, but at some other time or place

3. Plausible literary devices

a. The “science” can’t be too magical

b. Even if something can’t be fully explained in its function, it needs to have limitations that a real device or system might have

4. Any other sci-fi ingredients, consistent with the above

This is still an evolving idea for me, and like I said: I’m not inventing anything new. At most, I’m offering a name to a type of sci-fi that’s already out there. It’s the kind of sci-fi I want to write.

If anyone has ideas on how to refine this concept, I’d love to hear them! Or if you think I’ve missed the mark.

Who else writes sci-fi like this? Recommendations welcome.
